Pilgrimage to Padua & Venice

Travelling to Italy, Led by Rev'd Terrance Bell, 8 - 13 May 2019

ITINERARY

DAY ONE: Stansted - Treviso Airport

We fly from London Stansted on a scheduled flight to Treviso airport. On arrival in Treviso, we meet our tour manager and transfer by coach to Padua where we check into our hotel, Casa Del Pellegrino, located a few metres from the Basilica of St Anthony. Dinner will be in the hotel.

DAY TWO: Padua

Padua is associated with the Franciscan Saint Anthony who lived and died here in the 13th century. This morning, we will meet our local guide to visit the great Basilica and the Saint’s shrine and the beautiful medieval town of Padua. After lunch at choice, we will walk to the celebrated Capella degli Scrovegni, decorated with what are thought to be some of Giotto’s finest frescoes, for a visit. Return to the hotel for dinner.

DAY THREE: Venice

After an early breakfast, we travel by train to Venice, ‘La Serenissima’, where traditionally an angel appeared to St Mark whilst on his way to Rome and where the famous Basilica was constructed to house the relics of the Saint. This morning we meet our local guide for a tour of St Mark’s Basilica and the surrounding area. Lunch is at choice. There will be some free time in Venice before we return by train to Padua for dinner which will be served in the hotel.

DAY FOUR: Arcella and  Camposampiero

This morning we drive to the church of St Anthony at Arcella, a suburb of Padua, to where Anthony was taken on a farm wagon, when dying, and where he received the last rites from the chaplains of the Poor Clares, and passed away serenely. After visiting Arcella, we drive a short distance out of Padua to Camposampiero where St Anthony spent time in a Franciscan Hermitage, and near to where, in the woods, he had a small cell built among the branches of a walnut tree, where he would spend days in prayer and meditation, and where an apparition of St Anthony in ecstasy embracing the infant Jesus took place. We then transfer back to Padua. The rest of the afternoon will be at leisure for your own explorations. Today lunch is at choice and dinner in the hotel.

DAY FIVE: Day at leisure in Venice
After breakfast, we travel by train to Venice. Today is at leisure in Venice. You will have the opportunity to soak up the unique atmosphere of Venice or visit some of the landmarks of the city such as the Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs or one of the many museums. Alternatively, you may wish to travel by public waterbus to the tiny island of Torcello and visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and admire its beautiful Venetian-Byzantine mosaics.   We return to Padua by train. Dinner will be in the hotel.
DAY SIX: Padova - Treviso Airport
This morning we join our coach and transfer to Treviso Airport for our return flight.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
