Led by Fr Richard Biggerstaff. 29th May - 5th June 2019.
DAY ONE: Heathrow - Tel Aviv - Jerusalem
Check in at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 for our 8:10am flight to Tel Aviv. We arrive at Ben Gurion Airport mid-afternoon. After collecting our luggage we drive to the Jerusalem to check into our accommodation for a three-night stay.
DAY TWO: Jerusalem - Mount of Olives - Mount Zion
Proceed to the Mount of Olives. Visit the Chapel of the Ascension, the Church of the Pater Noster, and stop for a panoramic view across the Kidron Valley to Temple Mount and the Old City of Jerusalem. Walk down to the Church of Dominus Flevit, and the Church of All Nations in the Garden of Gethsemane. Stroll through the Christian Quarter and the rediscovered ancient Cardo. We will also visit the Garden Tomb, believed by many to be the garden and sepulchre of Joseph of Arimathea, and therefore a possible site of the resurrection of Jesus. This afternoon we visit Bethlehem via the Shepherds’ Fields, then visit Manger Square, the Basilica and the Cave of the Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
DAY THREE: Jerusalem - Holy Sepulchre - Ecce Homo - Bethesda
This morning we visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, followed by a walk to the Ecce Homo Arch, where Jesus was presented to the crowd. Visit the Lithostrotos, the pavement where Jesus was tried and scourged within the convent of the Sisters of Zion. There will be a visit to the Ecce Homo terrace for a panoramic view. Afterwards, continue our walk to the pool of Bethesda and the Crusader church of St Anne. Follow the Way of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa through the narrow streets to Calvary, enshrined within the church of the Holy Sepulchre. This afternoon we visit Mount Zion to visit the Abbey of the Dormition, Room of the Last Supper (Cenaculum), and continue to the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu, where Peter denied Christ three times. Afterwards visit the Western (Wailing) Wall and the site of the original Temple.
DAY FOUR: Ein Karem - Bethlehem
Depart Jerusalem and drive to Bethany, home of Mary and Martha and also of Lazarus, whom Jesus called to life from the tomb (John 11:1 - 44). Continue away from Jerusalem down the winding road that was the setting for the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30 - 37) before arriving at Qumran where, in nearby caves, the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered. Proceed to the shores of the Dead Sea, lowest spot on Earth (for a bathe, if time permits). We continue northwards through the Jordan Valley, stopping at the River Jordan where we visit the baptismal site before driving past Jericho, the oldest inhabited city in existence, where Jesus tarried on his way to Jerusalem (Matt. 20:29). We stop to take a ride on the cable car up to the Mount of Temptation. We continue to Tiberias where we check into our hotel for a four-night stay.
DAY FIVE: Qumran - Dead Sea - Jericho - Mount of Beatitudes
We begin the day with a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. We then drive along the shores of the lake to see the places where Jesus lived and worked. Start with the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. Continue to Tabgha and the Church of the Loaves and Fishes. Visit the synagogue and celebrate Mass at Peter’s house at Capernaum. Head north towards the Golan Heights, through the ancient biblical capital of Dan, stopping to view Mount Hermon. Visit Caesarea Philippi, the site of Peter’s Confession that Jesus is the Christ of God. We see Banias, one of the sources of the River Jordan.
DAY SIX: Mount of Beatitudes - Sea of Galilee - Ceasarea Philippi
Drive inland to Nazareth where we visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and the house of St Joseph and Mary’s Well. Continue to Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle of changing water into wine. Drive to Mount Tabor, taking a taxi ride up the zigzag road to visit the Church of the Transfiguration.
DAY SEVEN: Nazareth - Cana - Tabor
This morning we will drive along the coastal road to National Park Caesarea, an ancient Mediterranean city halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, containing many ruins, most of which date from the Crusader period. Prominent among these are the hippodrome, the Crusader and the Roman amphitheater. Continue to Visit Mount Carmel Muhraka for a breathtaking view of Israel. Here Elijah confronted and defeated the Priests of Baal. Travel to Megiddo overlooking the Jezreel Valley which is considered the Armageddon of the New Testament.
DAY EIGHT: Galilee - Tel Aviv - Heathrow
Transfer to Ben Gurion Airport for our afternoon return flight arriving at Heathrow at 7:55pm.
Mass will be celebrated daily from 30th May to 4th June.
