Christmas Festivities in Assisi

ITINERARY
 
 
DAY ONE: London - Rome - Assisi
Daytime flight from a London airport to Rome. On arrival, transfer by coach to Assisi. Check in to our hotel in the old town. Dinner will be in our hotel on each evening of our stay in Assisi.
 
DAY TWO: Assisi
This morning will be free to attend Mass at one of the churches in Assisi. Lunch will be in the hotel. This afternoon there will be an introduction to the town by means of a walking tour, pointing out the main places associated with both St Francis and St Clare. 
 
DAY THREE: Assisi
This morning we have a guided tour of the twin basilica of St Francis by a resident friar. We see the frescoes attributed to Giotto in the Upper Basilica,and those by Cimabue and Simone de Martine in the Lower Basilica. Afterwards, drive by taxi to visit the Convent of San Damiano, where St Francis received his missionary message from the crucifix. The afternoon will be at leisure in Assisi. Midnight Mass will be celebrated in the Lower Basilica of St Francis.
 
DAY FOUR: Assisi
In the morning there will be an opportunity to attend Mass at the Basilica of St Francis (please note that Mass may not be celebrated in English). At 1:00pm, a festive lunch Italian style! In the afternoon, time to relax or work off lunch by climbing up to the Rocca Maggiore. A light supper will be served in the hotel.
 
DAY FOUR: Assisi - Greccio
This morning we may wish to attend Mass in the lovely small church of St Stephen. After Mass,drive to S. Maria degli Angeli, and the 17th century Basilica which contains the Porziuncula, St Francis’s small chapel.Continue to the Rieti or ‘holy’ Valley, where St Francis spent much of the last two years of his life. Lunch will be at a nearby hotel,before we drive to the Sanctuary of Greccio, where on Christmas Eve 1223, Francis enacted the first live Nativity tableau. Weather permitting,we attend the live tableau in the woods, followed by dinner. Overnight in a hotel in Greccio.
 
DAY FOUR: Greccio - Rome - London
After breakfast we return to Greccio to visit the Sanctuary where, apart from the cave of the crib, we can visit the kitchen, refectory, chapel and dormitory that were built for and used by St Francis and his followers. The modern church houses a collection of cribs of all kinds. Afterwards we have lunch in the village of Greccio before we transfer to Rome airport for the return flight to a London airport.
 
 

 

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.

Terms of Payment:
