Pilgrimage to Oberammergau

Mary Coulthurst, 1 June - 6 June 2020

ITINERARY

DAY ONE:
Morning flight from Gatwick to Munich. Transfer by coach to Garmisch Partenkirchen where we check into our hotel accommodation for a four-night stay. Dinner will be in our hotel on each night of our stay.
DAY TWO:

After breakfast, we take the cog wheel train and cable car up to Germany’s highest peak, Zugspitze, for a 360 degree panorama. Lunch will be at choice with the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

DAY THREE:

In the morning we drive to Munich, where we have a guided tour of the city, including the Theatinerkirchner, Frauenkirche (once the cathedral of Cardinal Ratzinger), the Marienplatz, the square which is at the heart of Munich and the Peterskirche, where Mass will be celebrated. On 27th June 1977 Ratzinger was elevated to Cardinal Archbishop of Munich by Pope Paul VI. Years earlier, he had spent time as a student at the Ludwig- Maximilian-University (also known as the University of Munich). He also served as a young priest at two Munich Churches: St Martin’s Parish Church in Munich- Moosach, and the Church of the Precious Blood (Heilig Blood) in Bogenhaussen. Lunch will be at choice. The afternoon will be at leisure in Munich, before we return to the our hotel in Garmisch Partenkirchen.

DAY FOUR:
This morning we drive to Innsbruck, where we have a morning tour of the city. Lunch will be at choice with the afternoon free for sightseeing. Places worth seeing include the Little Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachel) Innsbruck’s most famous symbol, consisting of 2,738 gilded copper shingles, or the glorious Hofburg palace, with state rooms which show the glories of the Tyrol region and also of the Hapsburg monarchy. We return to Garmisch Partenkirchen in the late afternoon.
DAY FIVE:
Transfer by coach to the village of Oberammergau where we check into our hotel accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay. After lunch at around noon (at choice), the Passion Play commences at 2:30pm, with an interval at 5pm during which we will be served a three-course dinner, before witnessing the second part of the Passion Play which finishes at 10:30pm, after which we walk the short distance back to our hotel.
DAY SIX:

After breakfast, there will be time at leisure in Oberammergau. We transfer to Munich Airport in the late afternoon for our return flight to the UK, arriving Gatwick late in the evening.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
