Pilgrimage to Assisi & The Land of St Francis

St John Fisher Church, Bexley. Led by Fr Paul Rout OFM. 15th - 21st October 2019.
ITINERARY
DAY ONE: London Stansted - Perugia - Assisi
Travel to Perugia by scheduled flights from London Stansted. On arrival we transfer by coach to our hotel, located within the old town of Assisi, for a six night stay. Mass will be celebrated during the course of the afternoon. Dinner will be in the hotel.
DAY TWO: Assisi - St Francis and St Clare
We start this morning with an early visit to the Tomb of St Francis in the crypt of the Basilica, where we hope to celebrate Mass before all the visitors arrive. Afterwards we have a guided tour of the twin basilica of St. Francis, by one of the friars. We see the frescoes attributed to Giotto in the Upper Basilica and those by Cimabue and Simone de Martini in the Lower Basilica. Lunch is at choice. This afternoon we walk through the streets of Assisi as Saints Francis and Clare would have known it. We visit St Clare’s Basilica, which now houses the Crucifix that called to Francis, the Cathedral, as well as the Chiesa Nuova (New Church), built on the site of Francis’ house. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY THREE: La Verna
After breakfast we travel by coach into Tuscany, past the birthplace of Michelangelo and up into the mountains to a sanctuary founded by St Francis on land given to him by a local nobleman. It was here that two years before the end of his life, Francis was the first person recorded to have received the Stigmata, that final great identifying sign of the Saint’s life with that of Christ. There will be time at the Sanctuary in the morning, including the celebration of the Mass. Today lunch at La Melosa restaurant is included. This afternoon we have time at leisure to give the opportunity, to those who wish, to join in the procession marking the occasion of Stigmata. Return by coach to Assisi. Dinner this evening is at choice.

DAY FOUR: Hermitage, San Damiano & the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli
This morning we take a twisting taxi ride to the Hermitage, situated high above Assisi on Monte Subasio, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis and his followers and is still an oasis of quiet today. The taxis wait for about forty minutes here before driving down to San Damiano below Assisi, which was where St. Francis received the message from the Crucifix to repair God’s church and where, later, St. Clare spent her cloistered life and founded her community. Afterwards we drive down into the valley to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli to see the Porziuncola, the chapel that St Francis restored, and which became the centre of his first community where he died. You will be given a bus ticket so that you can return up to the old town of Assisi in your own time. Mass will be celebrated during the course of the morning. Lunch is at choice  and dinner in the hotel.
DAY FIVE: Rieti Valley
Breakfast in the hotel. Today we leave Assisi and drive to the Sanctuary of Greccio where we visit the site where St Francis enacted the first Living Tableau of the Nativity. Lunch today is included at the Belvedere restaurant in the village of Greccio. Today we also visit the sanctuary of Fonte Colombo and, time permitting, a stop at the sanctuary of S. Maria de La Foresta will be made on our way back to Assisi. This evening dinner is at choice.
DAY SIX: Day at leisure in Assisi
Today will be at leisure in Assisi. Mass will be celebrated during the course of the day.  Lunch is at choice today and dinner will be in our hotel.
DAY SEVEN: Assisi - Perugia Airport - London Stansted
Breakfast in the hotel. Today we leave Assisi and drive to Perugia Airport where we check in for our return flight to London Stansted.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
