Pilgrimage to Rome & Assisi

Led by Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle. 1st - 7th June 2019
ITINERARY
DAY ONE: Bristol – Rome
Early flight from Bristol to Rome. On arrival in Rome, we transfer by coach to our accommodation, ‘Casa Ravasco San Pietro’, which is a short walk from St Peter’s. Today lunch is at choice and dinner in a local restaurant.
DAY TWO: St Peter’s Basilica – Afternoon at Leisure
This morning there will be a guided tour of St Peter’s basilica which houses Michelangelo’s Pieta, the artwork by Bernini and the tombs of several popes, including the late Pope John Paul II. Lunch is at choice. This afternoon will be free for your own explorations. You may decide to join the queue to the Vatican Museums to admire one of the largest art collections in the world and of course the Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel (entrance fees not included). This evening dinner is at choice.
DAY THREE: Catacombs – St Paul Outside the Walls – Medieval Rome
This morning we join our coach for the transfer to the Catacombs of St Calixtus, the most extensive in Rome, where the earliest Christians were buried in great numbers. A guide will escort us through the labyrinth of tunnels. We will then transfer to the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls for a visit before we return to our accommodation. Lunch is at choice. Today there will be an early evening walk through the medieval quarter of central Rome to discover sites such as Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi fountain. Dinner will be included at L’Eau Vive restaurant run by an order of Missionary Nuns, who after our meal will serenade us with hymns. A coach transfer back to our accommodation will be provided.

DAY FOUR: Rome – Assisi
After breakfast we join our coach and transfer to the old town of Assisi where our hotel is located. Today lunch is at choice. This afternoon we will walk to the Lower Basilica of St Francis to meet one of the resident Franciscan friars for a guided tour of the Basilica which will also include the Upper basilica and the Crypt where St Francis is buried. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY FIVE: Monte Subasio – San Damiano – S. Maria Degli Angeli
This morning we take a twisting taxi ride to the Hermitage, situated high above Assisi on Monte Subasio, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis and his followers and is still an oasis of quiet today. The taxis wait for about forty minutes here before driving down to San Damiano below Assisi, which was where St. Francis received the message from the Crucifix to repair God’s church and where, later, St. Clare spent her cloistered life and founded her community. Afterwards we drive down into the valley to visit the Basilica of S. Maria Degli Angeli to see the Porziuncola, the chapel that St. Francis restored, and which became the centre of his first community where he died. You will be given a bus ticket so that you can return up to the old town of Assisi in your own time. The rest of the day is at leisure. Lunch is at choice today and dinner will be in our hotel.
DAY SIX: Isola Maggiore
This morning we join our coach and transfer to Passignano where we take a boat ride to the picturesque island of Isola Maggiore, where St Francis spent forty days of Lent on his own in 1213. Today lunch is at choice. There will be some time at leisure before we take a boat ride back to Passignano. Coach transfer back to Assisi will be provided. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY SEVEN: Assisi – Rome – Bristol
Breakfast in the hotel. Today we leave Assisi and drive to Rome Fiumicino Airport where we check in for our return flight to Bristol.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
