Afterwards we return to Bethlehem.
DAY FOUR - SUNDAY
Mt of Olives - Mt Zion
Breakfast in the hotel. Depart from the hotel by coach and visit the Mount of Olives, with a magnificent view of all of ancient and modern Jerusalem, the centre of the modern biblical world. We then visit the Paternoster Church commemorating the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:2 - 4), and the Chapel of Dominus Flevit (The Lord Wept) (Luke 19:41-44), where we celebrate Mass. The group will then walk down to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed on the night before his arrest (Matt 26: 36-39). This afternoon depart by coach to visit Mount Zion where we will see the Upper Room, the site of the Last Supper (Matt 26:17 - 29), the tomb of King David, and the Abbey of the Dormition where the Virgin Mary is said to have fallen asleep for the last time. From here we visit the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu, the site where Peter thrice denied Jesus (John 18:15). Afterwards we drive to the Old Walled City of Jerusalem. Visit the Western (Wailing) Wall before returning to Bethlehem.
DAY FIVE - MONDAY
Old City of Jerusalem
This morning we have a walking-tour inside the Old City of Jerusalem. First we visit the Pool of Bethesda, where it is said that Jesus healed a man who was lame for thirty-eight years, before visiting the Church of St Anne (the mother of St Mary). We then begin our Way of the Cross procession (Via Dolorosa) on which we see the Lithostrotos (the traditional site where Pilate judged Jesus) (Matt 27:2), and the Ecce Homo Arch (where it is said Pilate exhibited his scourged prisoner to the crowds below with the words “Ecce Homo” - “Behold the man”) (John 18:28 – 19:26). We finish our procession at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the traditional site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. This afternoon we meet with the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal and the Chancellor Fr William Shomali. After a presentation by them we celebrate Mass in the Cathedral.
DAY SIX - TUESDAY
Qumran - Dead Sea - Galilee
This morning we depart Bethlehem and travel to Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947. We celebrate an open air Mass here and continue to the Dead Sea for relaxation and bathing before travelling to Yardenit, the Baptism site where the Jordan River flows out from the Sea of Galilee. We continue to Tiberias where we check into our hotel for a three-night stay.
DAY SEVEN - WEDNESDAY
Sea of Galilee
Beakfast in the hotel. We then have a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee followed by a visit to Capernaum where Jesus lived (Matt 4:13), and from where, whilst he was walking along the shores of the Sea of Galilee, he met Simon named Peter and his brother Andrew (Matt 4:18 -20). We then continue to Tabgha, the site of the miracle of the loaves and fishes (Matt 15:29 -38), and then to the House of St Peter where Jesus healed Peter’s Mother-in-Law (Matt 8:14) and to the Mount of Beatitudes, where the Sermon on the Mount is thought to have taken place (Matt 5:1 - 7; 28). Mass will be celebrated at one of these locations during the day. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY EIGHT - THURSDAY
Cana - Nazareth - Ibilin
This morning we drive to Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle of changing water into wine. Continue to Nazareth and visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, where we celebrate Mass. Afterwards we visit the house of St Joseph, and see Mary’s Well. This afternoon we meet Archbishop Elias Chacour and see the Mar Elias Educational Institute (venue to be confirmed).
