Christmas in Assisi

Introduction

To celebrate the joyful mystery of the Nativity, 2000 years on, we have chosen to travel to Assisi, because it provides the opportunity to get away from it all. There is undoubtedly a spirit of festivity within the walls of this small city (which is twinned with Bethlehem), but perhaps more importantly, there is a very prevalent feeling wherever you go of the Christian meaning of Christmas. Cribs (Presepi) abound, some simple, others works of art and some sheer technical wonders. Of course, it is no coincidence that we see them here in Assisi as we have probably never seen them before, because it is to St Francis of Assisi that we have to be grateful for presenting this human image of the Nativity in the first place. St Francis was overwhelmed by the very real beginning of Christ, and at a time when heresy and superstition were rife, he desired to bring people back to the essential truths concerning Jesus. And what more direct and relevant way of doing this, than using real life animals and people as an illustration! So on Boxing Day we journey to Greccio, to the village which held a dear place in St Francis’ affections, and where he said that he had seldom seen such great faith. People still flock here to see the Saint’s legacy in the grand exhibition of cribs, large and small, and weather permitting, the live tableau in the woods reliving how that first nativity scene on Christmas Eve 1223 came about. We spend the night near to Greccio, so that we can make sure of seeing the tableau if weather conditions allow it to be performed.

Basic Itinerary

DAY ONE - SATURDAY

London Airport - Rome - Assisi

Daytime flight to Rome. On arrival, transfer by coach to Assisi. Check in to our hotel in the old town. Dinner will be in the hotel.

DAY TWO - SUNDAY

Assisi

This morning will be free to attend Mass at one of the churches in Assisi. Lunch will be in the hotel. This afternoon there will be an introduction to the town by means of a walking tour, pointing out the main places associated with both St Francis and St Clare. Dinner will be in the hotel.

DAY THREE - MONDAY

Assisi - Perugia

This morning we have a guided tour of the twin basilica of St Francis by a resident friar (providing an
English-speaking friar is in residence at the time). The Basilica was built to house the tomb of St Francis, beginning as soon as he was canonised in 1228. Amongst all the glories of the Basilica and the tomb of St Francis, we see the frescoes attributed to Giotto in the Upper Basilica and those by Cimabue and Simone de Martine in the Lower Basilica. Afterwards there will be a trip by taxi to visit the Convent of San Damiano, where St Francis received his missionary message from the crucifix. This afternoon there will be the opportunity to travel to Perugia for last-minute Christmas shopping (please note that due to traffic restrictions the coach is not allowed to enter the city of Perugia. A short train journey is necessary to reach the centre, the cost of which is payable at the time). Dinner will be in the hotel. Midnight Mass will be celebrated in the Lower Basilica of St Francis.

DAY FOUR - TUESDAY

Assisi

In the morning there will be an opportunity to attend Mass at the Basilica of St Francis (please note that Mass may not be celebrated in English). At 1:00pm, a festive lunch Italian style! In the afternoon, time to relax or work off lunch by climbing up to the Rocca Maggiore. A light supper will be served in the hotel.

DAY FIVE - WEDNESDAY

Assisi - Greccio

In the morning there is the opportunity to attend Mass in the Basilica of St Francis or perhaps in the lovely small church of St Stephen. Late morning we leave by coach for the Rieti or ‘holy’ Valley, where St Francis established several communities in his lifetime and where he spent much of the last two years of his life. We have lunch at a nearby hotel before driving to the Sanctuary of Greccio, where on Christmas Eve 1223, St Francis wanted to celebrate the feast as vividly as possible, bringing home to everyone the circumstances of Christ’s birth. And so, he had enacted the first Nativity tableau and during this scene a nobleman follower saw Christ as a baby in a manger. Weather permitting we attend the live tableau in the woods followed by dinner. Overnight in a hotel near to Greccio.

DAY SIX - THURSDAY

Greccio - Rome - London Airport

After breakfast we return to Greccio to visit the Sanctuary where, apart from the cave of the crib, we can visit the kitchen, refectory, chapel and dormitory that were built for and used by St Francis and his followers. The modern church houses a collection of cribs of all kinds. Afterwards we have lunch in the village of Greccio before we transfer to Rome Airport for the return flight to the U.K.
