In the footsteps of St Francis & St Benedict Led by Bishop Martin Shaw
Introduction
St Francis is invariably associated with the town of Assisi and although Assisi did indeed have a significant part to play in the Saint’s life, to gain a real insight into the message and spirituality of Francis, one must take into account the peripatetic nature of his mission. The first part of this seven-day itinerary sets out to delve a little into the mind of the Saint by following some of the paths that he travelled along within the regions of Umbria and Lazio. This journey will bring you into closer contact with some of the most significant episodes of Francis’ life, while leading you through some beautiful and lesser-known parts of the Italian landscape. Although St Francis was inspired to follow a religious life in the outside world, he undoubtedly adapted the structure of prayer and work of the Benedictine Order as the foundation for his community of brothers. St Benedict founded a monastic system in the 6th century that spread throughout Europe. Born in Norcia in Italy in about 480, he was educated in Rome, but left for the mountains and lived in a cave at Subiaco, where he was fed and clothed by a friend, Romanus, who was a monk in a nearby monastery. Gradually Benedict became famous as a good man and many came to him to seek spiritual guidance. Before long he had founded twelve small monasteries in the region then later he moved south to found the monastery of Monte Cassino. He is thought to have died about 550 of a fever whilst visiting the poor. His monasteries were governed by a rule based on prayer and worship, physical work and hospitality. There are still many religious houses today dedicated to the rule of Benedict, and his influence is felt in the wider church.
Basic Itinerary
DAY ONE - TUESDAY
Bristol/London Airports - Assisi
We fly from Bristol or London on a scheduled direct flight to Rome. On arrival in Italy, we transfer by coach to Assisi where we check into our guesthouse, the Casa S Brigida, situated just outside the town walls, for a 4-night stay. Dinner will be in the guesthouse on each evening of our stay.
DAY TWO - WEDNESDAY
Assisi
This morning, we walk through the streets of Assisi as Saints Francis and Clare would have known it. Visit the Cathedral of San Ruffino, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Chiesa Nuova (New Church), built on the site of Francis’ house. Afterwards we visit St Clare’s Basilica, which now houses the Crucifix that called to Francis and the tomb of St Clare. This afternoon we travel the short distance into the valley below Assisi and visit the Porziuncola and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. We are welcome to stay for the Solemn Commemoration of the death of St Francis (Transitus di San Francesco) in the Basilica. Afterwards return to our guesthouse.
DAY THREE - THURSDAY
The Feast of St Francis
This morning will be free to attend services to celebrate the Feast of the Saint. There will be many festivities in Assisi to mark the Feast Day. This afternoon there will be the opportunity to attend Vespers in the Lower Basilica.
DAY FOUR - FRIDAY
Assisi
This morning we take a twisting taxi ride to the Hermitage, situated high above Assisi on Monte Subasio, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis and his followers and is still an oasis of quiet today. The taxis wait for about forty minutes here before driving down to San Damiano below Assisi, which was where St Francis received the message from the Crucifix to repair God’s church and where, later, St Clare spent her cloistered life and founded her community. In the afternoon there will be an explanation of the Basilica, hopefully by one of the resident friars.
DAY FIVE - SATURDAY
Spoleto - Subiaco
This morning we drive to the beautiful city of Spoleto, where Francis, as a young man abandoned his quest for knighthood and glory in battle. Through a dream Francis received God’s message that the fighting intended for him was of a different nature entirely and so he returned to Assisi. Spoleto’s ancient past speaks out loud and clear as one walks through its streets and passes a great Roman arch, Roman house, medieval palaces and one of the finest Romanesque churches in Umbria and of course a splendid cathedral. In the diocesan museum there is also a Franciscan treasure, a letter from St Francis to Brother Leo, one of the few surviving examples of his handwriting. Afterwards, we continue towards Subiaco, checking into the guesthouse of La Foresteria for dinner and a two-night stay.
DAY SIX - SUNDAY
Subiaco
After breakfast we visit Benedict’s monastery, built around the Sacro Speco (Holy Cave) where he lived for three years. Here St Benedict wrote his Rule. After lunch we visit St Scholastica’s Monastery, built by Benedict and his twin sister, Scholastica, and originally one of twelve in this area. We see the cloisters from the 6th and 11th centuries, as well as the medieval church decorated by Cosmati. Lunch vand dinner are included today.
