Jordan

Jordan: Towards the Promised Land
Spiritual Director: Canon Christopher Tuckwell

Introduction

We move to the Old Testament theme of the Exodus. We are not attempting to follow the detailed route of the Israelites but to experience something of the Exodus experience. We travel through the desert and, like Moses, see the Promised Land from Mount Nebo. Like Moses we will not enter the Promised Land as we will return home from Amman.

Basic Itinerary

DAY ONE - MONDAY

London Heathrow - Amman

Daytime flight from London Heathrow to Amman. Transfer to hotel in Amman for dinner and a two-night stay.

DAY TWO - TUESDAY

Jerash - Amman

This morning we visit Jerash (Gerasa, in “the region of the Gerasenes” Mark 5:19), still an incredibly preserved Roman city. This afternoon we visit Amman City (ancient Rabbath-Ammon, or Rabba), the capital of the Ammonite Kingdom. We see the massive ancient fortifications, which are still standing, as well as the Roman Forum. We visit our fellow Christians in Amman, before dinner in our hotel.

DAY THREE

Amman - Baptism - Madaba - Mt Nebo - Petra

Today we drive to "Bethany beyond Jordan where John was Baptising" (John 1:28), the baptismal siteeast of the Jordan River. This is possibly the place where Jesus fled after he was threatened with stoning (John 10:40). Then to Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have viewed the Promised Land. From here we continue to Madaba, mentioned in the Old Testament, including accounts of Moses and the Exodus, and David's war against the Moabites. Madaba is also famous for its outstanding Byzantine mosaics and the ancient church of St George containing a 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Continue to Petra for a two-night stay.

DAY FOUR

Petra

We spend today in Petra, built by the Nabateans 2000 years ago in the south of Jordan. Annexed by the Emperor Trajan, rediscovered by Johan Burckhard in 1812. We walk to Petra. Those who wish can travel by horse drawn cart. Visit the city’s most famous monument, the treasury, the 7000-seat theatre dating from the time of Christ, and many other unique buildings and facades.

DAY FIVE - FRIDAY

Petra - Kerak - Ammanl

Breakfast at the hotel, drive to Kerak to see the ruins and the great Crusader castle, which was finally conquered by Saladin. Return to Amman for an overnight stay.

DAY SIX - SATURDAY

Amman - London Heathrow

Transfer to Amman Airport for our return flight to London Heathrow.
