Oberammersord

The Passion of Sordevolo and Oberammergau

Introduction

The theme of Holy Week and the suffering of Jesus Christ culminating in his crucifixion runs through the itinerary for our visit to northern Italy and southern Germany. We start by visiting the Chapel of the Holy Shroud in Turin, after which we experience the awesome three-hour long Passion Play in the tiny village of Sordevolo, following a 200 year tradition of staging the play every 5 years. We continue to Milan where we view Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, ‘The Last Supper’. Our final port of call is the Bavarian town of Oberammergau, where the villagers have staged the Passion Play every ten years since 1634. Apart from the short stays in the cities of Turin, Milan and Munich, we enjoy the beauty of the mountains and lakes of the Piedmont region of Italy, and the picturesque alpine village of Oberammergau. As if this is not enough, we stay in the sanctuary of Oropa, near Sordevolo which dates back to the 4th century and its foundation by Bishop Eusebius which is like being set down in Camelot. Its scale defies imagination; purpose built accommodation which can house 1000 people and a complex complete with bars, resaurants, shops and a pharmacy. The particular object of devotion at Oropa is Our Lady, represented by a beautiful medieval statue of a Black Madonna, but this is a place that belongs to the people of the region and is also appreciated for the sublime natural beauty of its position. We also visit the lakes of Orta and Maggiore during our stay here.

DAY TWO - SUNDAY 4TH JULY

Turin - Oropa - Sordevolo

Transfer by road to the sanctuary of Oropa, which dates its origins back to the 4th century and its foundation by Bishop Eusebius. The particular object of devotion at Oropa is Our Lady, represented by a beautiful medieval statue of a black madonna. The sanctuary is also appreciated for the sublime natural beauty of its position. There will be an opportunity to attend Sunday Mass. Lunch will be included today and the afternoon will be at leisure to discover the sanctuary and the Sacro Monte or alternatively enjoy one of the lovely walks that can be taken directly from the Sanctuary or tale the cable car to the top of the mountain. In the evening we travel the short distance to the village of Sordevolo to witness the Passion Play enacted by more than 400 of the local residents. (The auditorium is undercover!).

DAY THREE - MONDAY 5TH JULY

Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore

Today we enjoy a full day excursion to the lakes of Orta and Maggiore. We first visit the charming lakeside town of Orta San Giulio and from here we will make the short crossing to the island of San Giulio and its Basilica which features in the television programme made to accompany the ‘Seeing Salvation’ exhibition at the National Gallery. San Giulio has a particular atmosphere because of the exhortation to respect the peace and quiet of the place. After lunch (at choice) we continue to Lake Maggiore and see some of the sights that have made this lake so well loved by tourists now and in the past. Dinner will be included today at Oropa.

DAY FOUR - TUESDAY 6TH JULY

Oropa - Turin - Milan

Transfer by coach to Turin, from where we travel by train (first class) to Milan, to check in at our centrally-located hotel for a two-night stay. This afternoon we visit the church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie to view Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, ‘The Last Supper’. Lunch and dinner are at our own choice today.

DAY FIVE - WEDNESDAY 7TH JULY

Milan

Today we have a tour of the Cathedral and the surrounding area. Milan Cathedral is the third largest in the world and one of the most flamboyant in style, where Charles Borromeo is buried in the crypt. Evidence of St Charles’ dynamic time as Archbishop is noticeable in the Cathedral, in several aspects of its interior design, and near the Cathedral is the Jesuit church of San Fedele that he commissioned in his bid to inspire greater devotion in members of his diocese. Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral. In the afternoon we travel across the city to the church of St Ambrose, which was founded by the great saint of the early church, who is also the patron saint of the City. Vestiges of the basilica that Anselm had built remain, but most of the present building dates from the 8th Century and is a wonderful example of the Italian Romanesque style. St Ambrose’s remains are housed in a 9th century golden altar. Lunch is included today in a local restaurant with dinner at our own choice.

DAY SIX - THURSDAY 8TH JULY

Milan - Munich

This morning we travel by train (first class) to Munich. It will be possible to purchase lunch on the train. Afternoon arrival in Munich and transfer to our central hotel for an overnight stay. Dinner will be at choice.
