Bolsena & Assisi
Introduction
In 1263 a priest from Bohemia, Peter of Prague, was on his way to Rome and stopped in Bolsena to celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. Christina. It is said that Peter doubted that the consecrated host actually became the body of Christ and that as he reached the rite of the consecration during the Mass, blood flowed out of the host onto the corporal cloth and the altar stone. When Pope Urban IV, who was resident at that time in the Papal Palace of Orvieto, heard of this event he sent the Bishop of Orvieto to authenticate the miracle and bring the corporal to Orvieto, where it was housed in the cathedral.
In 1264 the Pope published the Bull 'Transitus' proclaiming the institution of the Feast of 'Corpus Christi', which affirmed the Church's teaching regarding the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated bread and wine.
Urban IV also enlisted the help of the great Dominican divine, Thomas Aquinas, who was teaching in the Dominican community in Orvieto, to write the office for the feast of Corpus Christi. The desk at which he wrote this work is preserved in the Church of San Domenico in Orvieto, as is the crucifix from which he heard Christ tell him that he had done well in his writing concerning the Sacrament.
Assisi is situated in the heart of Italy in the province of Umbria, a region celebrated for being verdant and an ever changing landscape of mountains, wooded hillsides and wide open valleys. It was in this area sometimes also called ‘The Land of Saints’ that St Francis and St Clare were born at the end of the 12th century. Both of them were reluctant leaders but their stubborn devotion to following the gospel ideals proved to be a beacon, which attracted many people and has meant that the Franciscan and Poor Clare orders have had a profound effect on the Church.
Time will be spent in Assisi and its surrounds seeing the places where the saints lived out their mission, whilst also being able to appreciate as Francis did the glory of the natural world in this special place.
Basic Itinerary
DAY ONE - MONDAY 27 OCTOBER 2008
London Heathrow - Rome - Orvieto
10:30am scheduled flight from Heathrow Airport to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. On arrival, transfer to our hotel, not far from Lake Bolsena, for a two-night stay. Dinner will be in our hotel on each night of our stay in Italy.
DAY TWO - TUESDAY 28 OCTOBER
Bolsena
This morning, our first visit is to the Basilica of Santa Cristina in Bolsena, which contains the Capella Nuova del Miraculo (Chapel of the Miracle), which was built in the 17th century. On the High Altar can be seen the marble stones stained with the blood from the host. Mass will be celebrated here. We also visit the Catacombs underneath the Basilica. The rest of the day is at leisure in Bolsena.
DAY THREE - WEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER
Orvieto to Assisi
After breakfast, drive to Orvieto, and ascend by Funicular to the medieval town where there will be a guided tour of the cathedral, including the chapel containing ‘The Last Judgement’ by Signorelli. Mass will be celebrated in the cathedral. We also visit the church of San Domenico, where the desk is contained at which St Thomas Aquinas wrote the office for the Feast of Corpus Christi. In the afternoon, we drive to Assisi and check into our hotel, situated very near to the Basilica of S Chiara in the old town of Assisi.
DAY FOUR - THURSDAY 30 OCTOBER
Basilica St Clare - Basilica St Francis
This morning we have a guided tour of the Old Town as St Francis and St Clare would have known it. We visit the basilica of St Clare and see the Crucifix, originally in San Damiano, that told Francis to “Rebuild my church, which stands in ruins.” The highlight of the morning is the twin basilica of St Francis, now fully reopened after the earthquake in 1997. We see the frescoes attributed to Giotto in the Upper Basilica and those by Cimabue and Simone de Martine in the Lower Basilica. The rest of the day is at leisure in Assisi and dinner is at the hotel.
DAY FIVE - FRIDAY 31 OCTOBER
Assisi
This morning we take a twisting taxi ride to the Hermitage, situated high above Assisi on Monte Subasio, which was a place of retreat and meditation for Francis and his followers and is still an oasis of quiet today. The taxis wait for about forty minutes here before driving down to San Damiano below Assisi, which was where St Francis received the message from the Crucifix to repair God’s church and where, later, St Clare spent her cloistered life and founded her community. The taxis will return you to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner is at the hotel.
DAY SIX - SATURDAY 1 NOVEMBER
Assisi - Bologna - London Gatwick
This morning we visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli to see the Porziuncula, the chapel that St Francis restored, and which became the centre of his first community and where he died. Mass for the Feast of All Saints will be celebrated here. Afterwards depart by road for Bologna Airport for our return flight to London, arriving Gatwick at 6:50pm.
