Cyprus - For tour leaders
Introduction
Cyprus is the land of St Paul and Barnabas, the land of Aphrodite. It’s a wonderful mixture of stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, monasteries and offers us a tour which speaks to all our senses. The major religion of the island is Orthodox and over the centuries this tradition has helped to shape the culture and ethos of the island. Our tour is in three parts and aims to give us three different experiences of the land.
Basic Itinerary
DAY ONE
London - Larnaca
We fly from London to Larnaca. On arrival, transfer to our hotel for dinner and a three-night stay.
DAY TWO
Larnaca
After breakfast we tour central Larnaca and visit the 9th century Church dedicated to Saint Lazarus, the patron saint of Larnaca. After his resurrection, tradition has it that Lazarus travelled to Larnaca where St Barnabus and Mark ordained him Bishop. This afternoon is free for your own exploration (but please note that shops are closed on Wednesday afternoons). Alternatively, the men may visit Stavrovouni Monastery (Unfortunately women are not allowed!). Return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY THREE
Ayios Minas - Lefkara
This morning we visit the convent of Ayios Minas where the nuns sell honey and icons. We continue to the nearby village of Lefkara, famed for its lace and icons. We have a free afternoon in Larnaca. Return to our hotel fpr dinner and overnight.
DAY FOUR
Nicosia
We depart after breakfast for Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Our first stop is the Cyprus Archaeological Museum housing an important collection off Cypriot antiquities and art treasures dating from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Our tour continues through the old Venetian walls to the Byzantine Museum to view an icon collection spanning over a period of 1,000 years. Nearby is the small, magnificently painted Cathedral of Nicosia. There will be time at leisure to sample Nicosia's excellent shopping centre before checking into our hotel for dinner an overnight.
DAY FIVE
The Troodhos Mountains
We leave Nicosia after breakfast and visit Asinou and Podhitou. Continue to the medieval village of Kakopetria. We enjoy a guided walk though its cobbled streets before visiting the nearby church of Ayois Nicolaos tis Stegis (St Nicholas of the Roof) so called because its dome is covered by another protective sloping roof. This church has particularly fine frescoed walls and ceiling. Continue to Limasol for dinner and a three-night stay.
DAY SIX
Limasol
Today is at leisure in Limasol.
DAY SEVEN
Curium
This morning we visit the nearby ruins of this ancient city kingdom of Curium that was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century AD. Amongst some of the treasures to be seen are the Roman amphitheatre still in use today; the 5th century AD mosaic floors of the house of Eustolios, once a private villa; the early Christian Basilica and the Agora. The Basilica, the mosaics and the inhabitants' belongings unearthed at Curium reflect the gradual transformation of this society from paganism to Christianity. If it is not too windy here we can swin at Curium beach. Alternatively there will be a chance to bathe at Governor's bay, before returning to Limasol for dinner and overnight.
DAY EIGHT
Paphos - Legacies of an ancient capital
After breakfast we leave for Paphos, which was visited by Paul and Barnabus and said to be the first area to have a Christian ruler. En route we see Petra Tou Romiou, a chunky, rugged rock marking the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love & beauty. In Paphos we visit the spectacular mosaics in the house of Dionysius, Orpheus and Aion; and the villa of Theseus which is remarkably intact, having been buried for sixteen centuries. The Odeon can seat over a thousand spectators. We see the Pillar of St Paul where the Apostle is said to have been bound and whipped. The pillar is located next to the remnants of an early Christian Basilica dating back to the 4th century. We visit the nearby catacombs of Saint Solomini. Transfer to our hotel in Paphos for dinner and a two-night stay.
DAY NINE
Paphos
Today will be at leisure in Paphos.
DAY TEN
