Pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo, Pompeii, Montecassino & Loreto
Basic Itinerary
DAY ONE - MONDAY
Stansted - Naples - Castellammare di Stabia
Depart Stansted Airport by scheduled flight to Naples. On arrival transfer by coach to Castellammare di Stabia for a three-night stay. Dinner will be in the guesthouse on each night of our stay.
DAY TWO - TUESDAY
Pompeii
This morning we drive to Pompeii, where we will visit the Shrine of the Rosary to celebrate Mass and have time for private devotions. After time for lunch at choice we have a guided tour of the excavated
remains of the ancient city, buried beneath the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. along with several thousands of its inhabitants.
DAY THREE - WEDNESDAY
Montecassino
Depart after breakfast and drive north to visit Montecassino. The abbey here is part of the famous monastery founded by Benedict in 529 after he left Subiaco. Holy Mass will be celebrated here, after which we visit the library where the Biblia Hebraica of Pope Gregory the Great can be seen. The doors of the abbey were cast in Constantinople in 1066. Afterwards, after stopping for a short visit at the War Cemetery en route, return to our hotel, near to Pompeii.
DAY FOUR - THURSDAY
Pompeii - Pietrelcina - Piana Romana – San Giovanni Rotondo
This morning we depart Castellammarre, and our first visit of the day is to Pietrelcina, the birthplace of St Pio, where we visit the Santa Anna Chapel, where St Pio was baptised, and celebrate Mass. From here we continue to nearby Piana Romana. It was here on 7 September 1910, that Padre Pio received the Stigmata. We continue by coach to the little town of San Giovanni Rotondo, where pilgrims flock to honour the memory of St Pio. Check into our guesthouse for a three-night stay.
DAY FIVE - FRIDAY
ANNIVERSARY OF ST PIOS BIRTHDAY
San Giovanni Rotondo
This morning will be devoted to the Shrine of St Pio, where we celebrate Mass, and visit the Saint’s tomb and the cell where he lived as a friar. The rest of the day will be at leisure in San Giovanni.
DAY SIX - SATURDAY
St Michael the Archangel - Luisa Piccarreta
We bid farewell to Rome and head north to Assisi. On arrival we have some free time for lunch in the old town before we meet our local guide for this afternoon’s walking tour of the places associated with St. Francis and St. Clare. We then transfer to S. Maria degli Angeli where we check into our hotel Domus Pacis for an overnight stay. Dinner in our hotel.
DAY SEVEN -SUNDAY
Lanciano - Manoppello - Loreto
Our first stop is the town of Lanciano, the site of a Eucharistic miracle in the 8th century where we visit the church of San Francesco in which the high altar houses the relics of the Eucharistic miracle. Mass will be celebrated here. From here we continue to Manoppello where we visit the Church of Volto Santo di Manoppello, housing an image which has been suggested to be the Veil of Veronica. After time at leisure we join our coach for the onward journey to Loreto where we check into our hotel for a two-night stay.
DAY EIGHT - MONDAY
Loreto
The small town of Loreto is situated a few miles south of Ancona and near the sea. Here, at least since the 15th century, the “Holy House” has been numbered among the most famous shrines of Italy. The great basilica, built and decorated by some of the great artists is merely the setting for a small house standing within the church itself. As the inscription “Hic Verbum Caro Factum Est” reminds us, this building is honoured by Christians as the home at Nazareth in which the Holy Family lived, and where the word was made flesh. However the building came to be there, the archaeological evidence is compelling that this is truly the home of the Holy Family. Here we will have a guided tour to include the Basilica and Mass will be celebrated. The rest of the day is at leisure.
DAY NINE - TUESDAY
Loreto - Ancona - Stansted
We depart Loreto and transfer to Ancona Airport where we check in for our return flight to Stansted.
