Pilgrimage to Naples and Sorrento
Travelling to Italy, led by Canon Martyn Neale. 17th June - 24th June 2017
DAY ONE - SATURDAY 17TH JUNE 2017
Gatwick - Naples - Vico Equense
Scheduled flight by British Airways from Gatwick to Naples. On arrival, transfer by coach to our accommodation for the seven-night stay at the Hotel Oriente in the seaside town of Vico Equense, just seven miles along the coast from Sorrento. Dinner will be in our hotel tonight.
DAY TWO - SUNDAY 18TH JUNE
Today provides one of the highlights of our tour, when we drive to Naples. We will meet our guide and visit the cathedral, which contains the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, patron Saint of Naples, where blood congeals every year in an annual miracle. Our main port of call will be the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, which houses five works of Caravaggio, including “The Flagellation”. There will be some time at leisure in Naples, before returning to our hotel for dinner. Sunday Eucharist will be celebrated during the day.
DAY THREE - MONDAY 19TH JUNE
Herculaneum and Vesuvio
This morning we visit the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, which is situated at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried by lava and ash after the eruption of Vesuvius. It was accidentally discovered by workers on the site in 1709, and has been gradually excavated since. Amongst the highlights of our visit will be the well-preserved baths of Herculaneum, built at the time of Augustus. Today lunch is at choice. In the afternoon we will transfer to the Vesuvius National Park for a visit to the volcano (Please note that the hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius requires visitors to be fit enough for the activity and wear closed flat comfortable shoes). Dinner will be in our hotel tonight.
DAY FOUR - TUESDAY 20TH JUNE
Pompeii and Sorrento
Pompeii, the bustling Roman port which was buried under volcanic ash in AD79 and remained there until excavations began in 1748. It therefore provides us with a fascinating insight into Roman daily life, for many of the major buildings are still visible. We will have a guided tour of the excavations before we join our coach and transfer to Sorrento, one of the most popular resorts in Italy, perched on a dramatic line of steeply rising cliffs, overlooking the Bay of Naples. The town is surrounded by orange and lemon groves and lush thickly-wooded hills where vines and olives are grown. A deep gorge runs down to the sea. The town has pretty pastel-coloured houses and several quaint small squares. We have an early dinner in the Foreigners Club in the town, before a trip to the Teatro del Tasso, for a performance of the Sorrento Musical recounting the daily life of people from Southern Italy.
DAY FIVE - WEDNESDAY 21ST JUNE
At leisure or optional day visit to Capri
Today will be spent at leisure in Vico Equense. For those who wish, there will be an optional day trip. We travel to the beautiful island of Capri, where we have a tour of the island by private mini-buses. Highlights here will be the dramatic Faraglioni rock formations and the spectacular views of the Bays of Naples and Salerno. Today lunch is at choice. There will be some free time before we join our boat back to Sorrento to transfer by coach to our hotel for dinner.
DAY SIX - THURSDAY 22ND JUNE
Amalfi and Ravello
Today we drive to the coast, to visit the cosmopolitan town of Amalfi, with a history dating back to the 6th century A.D., and once a great trading port to rival Venice. We walk to the Piazza Del Duomo, to visit the 9th century cathedral, possibly the most exquisite in southern Italy. The bronze doors of the cathedral are one of its highlights, with a portrait of St Andrew, the patron saint of Amalfi. We will also see the whitewashed cloisters, the Chiostro Del Paradiso, and the Madonna Col Bambino (16th century) beside the entrance to the crypt. After spending some time in Amalfi, including a break for lunch, we drive up into the mountains overlooking Amalfi, to the picturesque town of Ravello, for a breathtaking view of the Amalfi coast. Dinner will be at choice tonight.
DAY SEVEN - FRIDAY 23RD JUNE
Paestum and Salerno
This morning we visit the ancient Greek city of Paestum, one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy, and discovered by chance in 1750. As well as visiting the ruins, which include the Temple of Neptune, we have the option of visiting the museum (entrance fee not included), which includes wonderful vases from the underground temple. Lunch will be at choice. In the afternoon, we drive to Salerno, the site of the Allied Invasion of 1943. Here we will have some time a leisure to purchase lunch and to visit the 11th century cathedral, dedicated to St Matthew the Evangelist, who is (reputedly) buried in the crypt. We return by coach to Vico Equense. Dinner will be in a local restaurant tonight for the last night of our holiday.
DAY EIGHT - SATURDAY 24TH JUNE

This afternoon we transfer to Naples Airport for our return British Airways flight to Gatwick.
