Pilgrimage to The Marian Shrines of Naples

Led by Stella Kearns, 15th September - 21st September 2020

Celebrating 20 Years of Pilgrimages from Our Lady & St. Georges Church

Scheduled flight from London Gatwick to Naples. On arrival, we transfer by coach to our accommodation in Naples. Dinner will be in the hotel.

This morning we join our coach and transfer to Pompeii. Here we will meet our local guide for a visit of the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rosary. After time for lunch at choice, we join our coach and transfer to the archaeological park for a guided tour of the excavated remains of the ancient city, buried beneath the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD along with several thousands of its inhabitants. Coach transfer back to our hotel will be provided. Dinner will be in the hotel.

Today we drive along the coast, to visit the cosmopolitan town of Amalfi, with a history dating back to the 6th century AD, and once a great trading port to rival Venice. We walk to the Piazza Del Duomo, to visit the 9th century cathedral, possibly the most exquisite in southern Italy. The bronze doors of the cathedral are one of its highlights, with a portrait of St Andrew, the patron saint of Amalfi. We will also see the whitewashed cloisters, the Chiostro Del Paradiso, and the Madonna Col Bambino (16th century) beside the entrance to the crypt. After spending some time in Amalfi, including a break for lunch, we drive up into the mountains overlooking Amalfi, to the picturesque town of Ravello, for a breathtaking view of the Amalfi coast. Dinner will be in the hotel.

Today we drive northwards through breathtaking scenery to the town of Mercogliano. From here we take the cable car up to the sanctuary of Monte Virgine, famous for the icon known in Italian as Mamma Schiavona and in English as the Black Madonna. History has it that the original was painted by St Luke, and found its way from The Holy Land to Constantinople and eventually to Italy carried by the last Western Emperor of Byzantium, where it was put in a place near Avellino around 1300 AD. The new basilica was built in the 1950s to include parts of the old one which include significant early church relics. We will have time for lunch and to enjoy the splendid views from the mountain top amid the peace and quiet of its surroundings. We will return to our hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner will be in the hotel.

This morning, we drive to Sorrento, one of the most popular resorts in Italy, perched on a dramatic line of steeply rising cliffs, overlooking the Bay of Naples. The town is surrounded by orange and lemon groves and lush thickly-wooded hills where vines and olives are grown. A deep gorge runs down to the sea. The town has pretty pastel coloured houses and several quaint small squares. We will have time to explore Sorrento on our own. We have an early dinner in the Foreigners Club, before driving back to our hotel.
Today provides one of the highlights of our tour, when we drive to Naples. We will meet our guide and visit the cathedral, which contains Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, patron Saint of Naples, where blood congeals every year in an annual miracle. Afterwards we visit the church of Santa Maria Del Carmine, in Piazza Mercato, founded in the 13th century by Carmelite Friars who had fled The Holy Land during the crusade, arriving by sea in the Bay of Naples. We will see the two renowned holy relics: the first is a painting of the “Brown Madonna”, said to have been brought by the original Carmelites. The second is a figure of the crucified Christ with the crown of thorns missing. There will be some time for lunch in Naples before returning to our hotel. Dinner will be in the hotel.
Today we bid farewell to Italy, and transfer to Naples Airport for our return flight to London Gatwick.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
