A Pilgrimage to Vienna & The Danube Valley

Travelling to Austria, Led by Fr Kevin Moule, 6 - 10 May 2019

DAY ONE: London - Vienna - Klosterneuburg

Early morning flight by EasyJet from Luton arriving Vienna mid-morning. We make the short journey to Klosterneuburg to the north west of Vienna. We visit the 12th-century Abbey, still run by Augustinian canons. A private Mass will be celebrated here, followed by a guided tour of the Abbey by one of the monks. This will be followed by a wine tasting in the monastery’s world-famous Vinothek. Continue to Vienna (7 miles) to our hotel, the Classic Hotel Wien in the Second District of Vienna. This evening dinner will be in a restaurant near to the hotel.

DAY TWO: Vienna - Heiligenkreuz - Mayerling

After breakfast, we visit the Stephansdom ( Cathedral of St Stephen) followed by a short guided tour of the Cathedral. Afterwards, those who wish may visit the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer) for which there is an entrance fee of €10. Afterwards, a short panoramic tour of Vienna will be followed by a coach journey to the 12th century Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, tucked away in a valley in the midst of the Vienna woods. The modern parish church contains a fragment of the Holy Cross brought back by Duke Leopold V in 1188. The village of Mayerling is just three miles from Heiligenkreuz, and is where the two lovers, Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, killed each other in 1889. The room in which the lovers died is now a memorial church. We also visit the baroque Stations of the Cross, with through an avenue of linden trees, which leads to a Chapel. Return to Vienna (18 miles), where we make our own arrangements for dinner tonight.

DAY THREE: Mariazell

Today we take a trip by coach to Mariazell, which is the most important pilgrimage town in Austria. Pilgrims started coming here in the 12th century to worship a small wooden Madonna, which was said to work miracles, including King Ludwig of Hungary's victory over the Turks in 1370. To celebrate this, he had a chapel built here in thanksgiving. Mariazell subsequently grew into a great pilgrimage centre. We will celebrate a private Mass here, and see the seated Madonna in the Gnadenkapelle (chapel of Miracles). There are several nearby cafes and restaurants for us to have lunch, after which it is hoped to organise Stations of the Cross or the Rosary at the shrine church, before we return to Vienna. Dinner this evening will be at our own choice.

Our excursion by coach today is to the magnificent Abbey at Melk, situated on the Danube to the west of Vienna. We will have a guided tour of the Benedictine 11th century Abbey, and we hope to celebrate Mass here. Afterwards we enjoy the wonderful views of the Danube and have the opportunity to have lunch at the restaurant at the Abbey. After time at leisure, we return to Vienna where we have dinner in a local restaurant near to our hotel.

DAY FIVE: Vienna - London
This morning, Fr Kevin will celebrate Mass at the church of Maria am Gestede. Afterwards we visit the Hofburg Palace, the winter residence of the Hapsburg, and the Kapuziergruft, the Imperial Crypt, a burial chamber beneath the Capuchin church and Monastery. Afterwards, we transfer to Vienna airport, where we can get some lunch and check in for our return afternoon flight to Luton.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
