Pilgrimage to Fatima
10th - 14th May 2020
Since 1917, millions of pilgrims have visited the sanctuary of Fatima in northern Portugal to call on the protection of Our Lady who appeared here to three shepherd children for six months in succession instructing them to convey her message to the world that mankind should show penance for their sins and pray the rosary every day. The three, originally secret, messages of Fatima were for prayer, reparation, repentance and sacrifice, and the abandonment of sin. The first secret was a vision of hell which contrasts with the heaven previously shown to the children by Our Lady. The second secret included Mary’s instructions on how to save souls from hell and convert the world to the Christian faith. The third secret gives a vision of the death of the Pope and other religious figures. The message shows a flaming sword coming into contact with Our Lady and dying out, suggesting that in the end, good triumphs over evil. There will not be a priest accompanying the group to celebrate Mass. However, you will have the opportunity to take part in the several Masses which take place during the day at the sanctuary. There will be a Pax Travel Tour Manager either travelling with the group from London or meeting the group at Lisbon Airport. He or she will accompany the group while in Portugal.
Our scheduled flight departs from London to Lisbon Airport (currently, we are not able to confirm times and which London airport will be used. These details will be available later). On arrival and time permitting, we transfer to downtown Lisbon for a visit to the Church of San Antonio (also known in the Christian world as Saint Anthony of Padua) and the nearby Cathedral before transferring to Fatima. We will be accommodated for four nights at the Hotel Casa das Irmas Dominicanas (Dominican Sisters Hotel).
After breakfast we drive to the 14th century monastery of Batalha dedicated to Our Lady, with its famous ornate cloisters (and English connections). Late morning, we continue to the picturesque fishing village of Nazaré, first visiting the shrine of Our Lady of Nazareth, where Mass will be celebrated. We return to Fatima in the late afternoon.
Fatima is known as the Hope of the World, where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children between 13th May and 13th October 1917. There will be a guided tour in the morning including a visit to the Basilica and the Chapel of the Apparitions. The Basilica stands on the place where the three shepherds were playing at "building a small wall" on May 13, 1917, when they saw a sudden strike of lightning and became frightened to the point of gathering the flock to return home for fear it would rain. The Chapel of the Apparitions is on the site where five of the six apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place, in May, June, July, September and October, and where, by Our Lady’s direction, a chapel in her honour was to be constructed. After time for lunch at choice we proceed to Aljustrel for Stations of the Cross and to visit the Shrines of the Apparitions of Our Lady and the angels, and to see the homes of the children, and possibly relatives of Jacinta (and Francisco) and Lucia. After dinner, we join the famous celebrations marking the apparitions, beginning with International Rosary and Candlelight Procession, continuing with Holy Mass and Night Vigil.
After breakfast we join the concluding celebrations for the feast, including Rosary, Mass, the
anointing of the sick and Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This afternoon there will be the opportunity for private devotions and shopping, or else the opportunity for a visit to the museum, O Milagre de Fatima, which recreates the historical events from the beginning of the 20th century, the apparitions of the Angel of Portugal, the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun. Also, the Wax Museum of Fatima next to the sanctuary is worth a visit, where the story of the Fatima witnesses and other historical events are told through wax figures.
Morning at leisure. In the afternoon we transfer to Lisbon Airport for our return flight London.
This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
