Pilgrimage to The Holy Land
Guild of the Blessed Sacrament, Westminster Cathedral. Led by Fr Andrew Gallagher. 18th - 25th November 2019.
DAY ONE: Heathrow - Tel Aviv - Jerusalem
We check in at London Heathrow Airport for our 8:05am British Airways scheduled flight to Tel Aviv. We arrive at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport at 2:50pm, where we will be met and assisted by a representative inside the Customs area, near to the luggage collection point. After Customs clearance, we will meet our local guide. We then travel to Jerusalem where we check in to our hotel.
DAY TWO: Jerusalem - Mount of Olives - Mount Zion
Proceed to the Mount of Olives. Visit the Chapel of the Ascension, the Church of the Pater Noster, and stop for a panoramic view across the Kidron Valley to Temple Mount and the Old City of Jerusalem. Walk down from the Mount of Olives to the Church of Dominus Flevit where we celebrate Mass, and the Church of All Nations in the Garden of Gethsemane. This afternoon we drive to Mount Zion to visit the Abbey of the Dormition, Room of the Last Supper (Cenaculum), and continue to the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu, where Peter denied Christ three times. From here we walk down to the Western (Wailing) Wall the site of the original Temple on the Temple area.
DAY THREE: Jerusalem - Holy Sepulchre - Ecce Homo - Bethesda
This morning we visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem for an early Mass followed by a walk to the Ecce Homo Arch, where Jesus was presented to the crowd. Visit the Lithostrotos, the pavement where Jesus was tried and scourged within the convent of the Sisters of Zion. There will be a visit to the Ecce Homo terrace for a panoramic view. Afterwards continue our walk to the pool of Bethesda and the Crusader church of St Anne. Follow the Way of the Cross along the Via Dolorosa through the narrow streets to Calvary, enshrined within the church of the Holy Sepulchre.
DAY FOUR: Ein Karem - Bethlehem
Drive to Ein Karem, the village where John the Baptist was born, and where Mary visited Elizabeth. Continue on to Bethlehem via the Shepherds’ Fields, then visit Manger Square, the Basilica and the Cave of the Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Mass will be at either the Cave or the Chapel of St Jerome.
DAY FIVE: Masada - Dead Sea - Jericho - Tiberias
Depart Jerusalem and drive to Jericho, the oldest inhabited city in existence, where Jesus Tarried on his way to Jerusalem. Here we celebrate Mass in the Good Shepherd Church (Matt 20:29). We continue past the Inn of the Good Samaritan to Masada, which was Herod’s royal citadel and later the last outpost of Zealots during the Jewish Revolt. We then proceed to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on Earth (for a bathe if time permits). Afterwards we drive to the southern shores of Lake Galilee, stopping at the River Jordan to visit the new Baptismal site. Our final destination is the town of Tiberias, where we check into our hotel near to the Sea of Galilee for a three -night stay.
DAY SIX: Galilee - Mt of Beatitudes - Tabgha - Capernaum - Magdala
This morning we start with a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee before we drive along the shores of the Sea to see the places where Jesus lived and worked. Start with the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount. Continue to Tabgha and the Church of the Loaves and Fishes. Visit the synagogue and Peter’s house at Capernaum. In the afternoon we visit Magdala, the birthplace of Mary Magdalene. We hope to celebrate Mass here. From Magdala we return to Tiberias.
DAY SEVEN: Tabor - Nazareth - Cana
Drive to Mount Tabor, where we take a taxi ride up the zigzag road to visit the Church of the Transfiguration. From here we journey to Nazareth where we visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and the house of St Joseph and Mary’s Well. Continue to Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle of changing water into wine. We will celebrate Mass here.
DAY EIGHT: Galilee - Tel Aviv - Heathrow
We celebrate our final Mass at St Peter’s Church by the lakeside. In the afternoon, our coach departs for Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport for our return British Airways flight, arriving Heathrow at 8pm.
This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
