Pilgrimage to Knock
3 - 8 May 2021
DAY ONE: London - Knock
Check in at London Stansted Airport for our scheduled flight to Knock. On arrival at Knock Airport, transfer by coach to the hotel where we check in for our 5-night stay. This evening we have Mass in the Apparition Chapel. Dinner will be in our hotel on each night of our stay.
DAY TWO: Knock
This morning Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Apparitions before we join our guide for a tour of the Shrine, which is visited by 1.5million pilgrims every year. Afterwards we visit the Knock Folk museum which is located in the grounds of the Shrine. The museum houses a large collection of artefacts dealing mainly with life in rural Ireland during the 19th and early 20th centuries. After time for lunch we join the public ceremonies following the Stations of the Cross and Rosary Procession which ends at the Basilica. Dinner will be in our hotel.
DAY THREE: Ballintubber Abbey, Croagh Patrick
After breakfast we drive to Ballintubber Abbey, a 5th century abbey and the only one left in Ireland that was founded by an Irish King, Croabhdearg O’Conner the King of Connaught. Here we will have Mass and a tour before time for lunch. After lunch we will travel to Croagh Patrick which is set on the top of a mountain. In 441 St Patrick spent Lent on Croagh Patrick in prayer and fasting. Legend has it that it was from this mountain that St Patrick sent the reptiles of Ireland crawling to their doom. First of all, he rang a bell on the top of the mountain which attracted the reptiles, he flung the bell over the edge of the mountain and the reptiles followed. On the top of the mountain there is a small chapel and some breathtaking views. We return to Knock for free time and late dinner.
DAY FOUR: Attymass and Cong
In the morning, we visit the Fr Peyton CSC Memorial Centre in Attymass, Ballina, Co Mayo. At the memorial centre we are able to see a presentation of Fr Peyton’s life story and a photographic exhibition of the prayer crusades. We can enjoy the spectacular view of the Ox Mountains and hills from centre’s grounds. Mass will be celebrated here. We make our way to the picturesque village of Cong, situated on an island bordering County Mayo and County Galway. Lunch at choice, we suggest John J Burke's pub. We can enjoy the stunning lakeside scenery in what is known as 'Quiet Man' country where the film was set. We can, if we wish, visit the Quiet Man heritage centre (at our own expense) as well as the Royal Abbey. After time at leisure, return to our hotel.
DAY FIVE: Galway
This morning we celebrate Mass in the Apparition Chapel. Depart to Galway for a half-day excursion. We visit the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, one of the last cruciform churches built in Ireland. Lunch at choice. We then visit the church of St Nicholas (Church of Ireland), the largest medieval church in Ireland, followed by a visit to the Spanish Arch, one of Galway’s oldest structures, situated on the banks of the Corrib River. We return to Knock for dinner.
DAY SIX: Knock - London
This morning we have our final visit to the Shrine, before we transfer by coach to Knock Airport. Here we check in for our return flight to London Stansted.
