Pilgrimage to Fatima and Tomar

On the occasion of the centenary of the Apparitions in Fatima by Our Lady in 1917 departing on:

10 - 14 September 2017, led by Fr Kevin Moule.

Since 1917, millions of pilgrims have visited the sanctuary of Fatima in northern Portugal to call on the protection of Our Lady who appeared here to three shepherd children for six months in succession instructing them to convey her message to the world that mankind should show penance for their sins and pray the rosary every day. The October tour will be marking the 99th anniversary of the October apparitions and the ‘Miracle of the Dancing Sun’, which was witnessed by many of the bystanders at the time.
DAY ONE: London - Lisbon - Santarem - Fatima
Scheduled flight from London Luton to Lisbon. On arrival our coach takes us to Santarem to visit the church of “The Miracle of the Bleeding Host”. Mass will be celebrated in Santarem. Lunch will be at choice. Continue to Fatima, where we check into our hotel, Casa das Irmas Dominicanas, for a four-night stay. Dinner will be in our hotel on each night of our stay. We make our first visit to the Sanctuary before dinner.
DAY TWO: Fatima - Aljustrel
Fatima is known as the Hope of the World, where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children between 13th May and 13th October 1917. There will be a guided tour in the morning including a visit to the Basilica and the Chapel of the Apparitions. After time for lunch we proceed to Aljustrel for Stations of the Cross and to visit the Shrines of the Apparitions of Our Lady and the angels, and to see the homes of the children, and possibly relatives of Jacinta (and Francisco) and Lucia. After dinner in the hotel we join the famous celebrations marking the apparitions, beginning with International Rosary and Candlelight Procession, continuing with Holy Mass and Night Vigil.
Today will be spent in Fatima. In the morning, we take part in the Mass at the sanctuary. Lunch will be in our hotel. This afternoon there will be the opportunity for private devotions and shopping, or else the opportunity for a visit to the museum, O Milagre de Fatima, which recreates the historical events from the beginning of the 20th century, the apparitions of the Angel of Portugal, the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun. Also, the Fatima wax museum next to the sanctuary is worth a visit, where the story of the Fatima witnesses and other historical events is told through wax figures. After dinner in the hotel we join the famous celebrations marking the apparitions, beginning with International Rosary and Candlelight Procession, continuing with Holy Mass and Night Vigil.
DAY Four: Fatima
Today there will be special events to mark the 100th anniversary of the September apparition by Our Lady to the three shepherd children on this date in 1917. We join the concluding celebrations for the feast, including Rosary, Mass, the anointing of the sick and Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The afternoon will be free for private devotions and souvenir hunting. Lunch and dinner will be in our hotel today.
DAY FIVE: Tomar - Lisbon - London
Early start to drive to Tomar, which has been a Catholic town since the taking back of this part of Portugal from the Moors in the 12th Century. At first it was under the command of The Knights Templar, who constructed the awesome castle and convent of the order of Christ, which became the Templar headquarters. In 1314, when the Templars were being suppressed by the Papacy, a new order, the Knights of Christ was established. The Convento de Christo is one of the most magnificent buildings in Portugal and we will have a guided visit spending some time here before continuing to the Church of St John the Baptist and the Chapel of our Lady of The Conception. Mass will be celebrated during the morning. Afterwards, transfer by coach to Lisbon to our return flight to Luton.

This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
