A Pilgrimage to the Painted Churches and Monasteries
Travelling to Romania, Led by Fr Kevin Moule, 10 - 16 Oct 2018
This week offers a pilgrimage to Eastern Europe, visiting two important towns in Romania and a number of painted Orthodox monastic churches of a kind unique to the country. Often these are set amidst superb Carpathian mountain scenery. There is also the chance to experience something of an old-style rural economy, as well as getting an insight into the history of the people, both over the centuries past and also during the more recent Russian domination, the Ceaucescu regime and the recovery from its aftermath.
DAY ONE: London Luton - Iasi
Scheduled evening flight from London Luton to Iasi in north-east Romania. Upon arrival in Iasi we will transfer by coach to our 4-star hotel for dinner and a two-night stay.
DAY TWO: Iasi
Later this morning we will visit some places of interest in Iasi. Iasi has a great cultural tradition, and is regarded as one of the most important university towns. There are also great monasteries, churches, public buildings and museums for us to explore. Churches of interest include the Moldavian Metropolitan Cathedral (one of the most outstanding in the country), the Church of the Three Hierarchs, and the Armenian Church, which is the oldest church in Iasi. Mass will be celebrated during the morning. Lunch will be in our hotel today, with the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner will be served in our hotel tonight.
DAY THREE: Iasi - Neamt Monastery - Suceava
After breakfast we take a trip by coach to Neamt, located south of the region. Here we will visit The Neamt Fortress and Neamt Monastery. Afterwards we continue to the old capital of Moldavia, Suceava, where we check-in to our hotel for a 4-night stay.
DAY FOUR: The Painted Churches
Today will be a full day excursion in the Bucovina region, to visit and explore five of the more important Moldavian painted monastery churches, all of which are set to stunning mountain scenery. We will visit the Monastery in Voronet Moldovita and Sucevita. Lunch will be at choice in Sucevita today. In the afternoon we visit Humor Monastery and Arbore Monastery before returning to Suceava for dinner.
DAY FIVE: Suceava
Today will be spent in Suceava where you have the opportunity to visit the painted St George’s church (part of the Monastery of St John The New), as well as Mirauti Church, the oldest church in Suceava. Lunch will be at choice during the day and dinner will be at the hotel.
DAY SIX: Agapia Monastery - Bicaz Gorge
After breakfast we travel past the Bicaz Lake and Gorge, one of the deepest in the Carpathians. We arrive in the village of Agapia to visit Agapia Monastery, one of Romania’s largest convents, with 350 nuns. Lunch is at choice today. We then return to Suceava in the late afternoon. Dinner will be served in our hotel tonight.
DAY SEVEN: Iasi - London
After breakfast we transfer to Iasi Airport for our return direct flight from Iasi to Luton.
This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
