Pilgrimage to Oberammergau & Salzburg
Fr Michael Munnelly, 15 June - 20 June 2020.
DAY ONE: Stansted - Munich
Morning flight from Stansted to Munich. Transfer by coach to accommodation in Munich where we check into our accommodation for a two night stay. Lunch at choice and time to freshen up, we visit the infamous concentration camp, Dachau. Here we will visit the Catholic Chapel which commemorates the many martyrs who died in the camp. We return to Munich in the late afternoon for dinner.
DAY TWO: Munich
After breakfast, we have a guided tour of the city, including the Theatinerkirchner, Frauenkirche (once the cathedral of Cardinal Ratzinger), the Marienplatz, the Square which is at the heart of Munich and the Peterskirche, where Mass will be celebrated. On the 27th June 1977 Ratzinger was elevated to Cardinal Archbishop of Munich by Pope Paul VI. Years earlier, he had spent time as a student at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University (also known as the University of Munich). He also served as a young Priest at two Munich Churches: St Martin’s Parish Church in Munich-Moosach, and the Church of the Precious Blood (Heilig Blood) in Bogenhaussen. Lunch will be at choice. The afternoon will be at leisure in Munich. Dinner will be in our hotel this evening.
DAY THREE: Munich - Salzburg
After breakfast, we drive to Salzburg, a beautiful city with a rich cultural history. It is known by musicians as the Festival City and the birthplace of Mozart, and is called the Golden City of High Baroque by art lovers. Historians identify it as the Florence of Northern Europe, or even the Austrian Rome. We check into our hotel for a two night stay. Mass will be celebrated during the day. To introduce us to the city, there will be a guided walking tour of the cultural centre, with a first look at some of the sites of interest including palaces, fountains, parks and gardens. Dinner will be in our hotel or a local restaurant.
DAY FOUR: Salzburg
After breakfast, the morning will be spent browsing in the old town, so that we will be refreshed after an early lunch (at our own choice), and ready to take the four hour Sound of Music tour, starting at 2pm and lasting four hours. You not only see highlights of the film, but also visit landmarks connected with the film, ranging from Leopoldskron Castle used as the Trapp Family home to the Wedding Church at Mondsee. Dinner will be in our hotel or a local restaurant.
DAY FIVE: Salzburg - Oberammergau
Transfer by coach to the village of Oberammergau where we check into our hotel accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay. After lunch at around noon (at choice), the Passion Play commences at 2:30 pm, with an interval at 5pm during which we will be served a three course dinner, before witnessing the second part of the Passion Play which finishes at 10:30 pm, after which we walk the short distance back to our hotel.
DAY SIX: Oberammergau - Munich - Stansted
After breakfast, and time at leisure, we check out of our hotel and transfer to Munich Airport for our return flight to the Stansted.
Early booking discount of £30 per person for bookings received by 31st January 2019.
