Led by Fr Stephen Parker, 5th - 10th Feb 2018
Scheduled flight by Easyjet from Luton to Rome Fiumicino, arriving at 19:40, where we meet our Pax Travel Tour Manager, who will escort us to our coach and will remain with us for the duration of the tour. We transfer to our accommodation the Casa Ravasco (Via della Stazione di S.Pietro, 27, 00165) Rome (or similar) which is just a few minutes walk from St Peter’s square. Dinner will be included on each night of your stay unless stated otherwise.
This morning, visit St Peter’s Square for a tour of the basilica including the Pieta, the crypt, which contains the tombs of several popes and the tomb of the late Pope John Paul II. After lunch at choice we visit the Basilica of St Paul Without the Walls, built over the site of the saint’s martyrdom, where we celebrate Mass, then go on to one of the catacombs, burial place for the early Christians. In the late afternoon we return to our accommodation. Dinner will be in a local restaurant.
This morning we take our seats in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly General Papal Audience (if His Holiness, Pope Francis, is in Rome at the time). After lunch at choice, our coach and guide will take us to one of the churches that all pilgrims to Rome must see. We visit the Cathedral of Rome: St. John Lateran, and afterwards cross the road to see the Scala Sancta - the steps brought back from Jerusalem by Empress Helena in the 4th century, and believed to be those that Christ climbed on his way to Calvary. Dinner will be at our own choice tonight.
This morning is free to explore Rome. For those who wish there will be an optional excursion to visit the Vatican Museums. This will also include the beautiful Sistine Chapel with its famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Lunch is This afternoon we drive to the Basilica of St Mary Major, where we have time to visit. From here we visit the nearby church of S. Pressede (St Praxedes), which is an early Christian Foundation with some of the finest apse mosaics in Rome. Afterwards we drive back to our accommodation. Dinner will be in a local restaurant.
This morning we travel to the Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo. It is located on the Capitoline Hill, where Nelson put up the British flag, before stopping Napoleon from entering Rome in 1799. Walk down past the Roman Forum, which was the ‘business centre’ of Ancient Rome. Afterwards walk to the Colosseum (Optional entry and guided tour for£22 per person based on a minimum of 25 people paying, for those who just wish to view the Colosseum from the outside, there will of course be no entry charge), where gladiators fought and Christians were thrown to the lions! Dinner will be in a local restaurant.
