A Weekend Break to Santiago de Compostela
8 - 11 May 2020
There are a number of places in our world that have been, in one way or another, touched by the presence of God. Santiago de Compostela is one. It is a place where James the Apostle preached the Gospel and brought the Christian faith to the Iberian Peninsula. When we go on Pilgrimage we hope that we, too, are touched by the presence of God. The story of James is a story of faithful Christian discipleship. We, too, are called to be disciples in the footsteps of those countless thousands who have travelled before us. We come asking that James the Apostle will pray for us and inspire us to be more faithful Christians and witnesses to the Lord.
There will not be a priest accompanying the group to celebrate Mass. However, you will have the opportunity to take part in the several Masses (not necessarily conducted in English) which take place during the day at the Cathedral. Mass in English is available (as of September 2019) at 9:30am each day in the Chapel of the Pilgrim’s Reception Office.
Our scheduled flight from London Stansted to Santiago de Compostela Airport departs at 12:10 in the afternoon. On arrival, transfer by coach to the town and check into our hotel for a three-night stay.
We visit the shrine of St James. We have a guided tour of the cathedral and its surroundings. The Cathedral has an amazing Baroque facade hiding a much earlier Romanesque building which lies on the site where, in the 8th century, it was thought that the tomb of St James had been discovered. The climax for us is touching the great figure of the saint behind the altar. The afternoon is free for our own explorations.
Today will be a free day in Santiago de Compostela. Apart from browsing in the shops or strolling in the park, we may wish to visit the Cathedral’s various museums or the special churches of St Martin Pinario or Santa Maria del Sar. For those keen walkers, why not take a taxi to Monte do Gozo (a hill in Santiago de Compostela. It is known for being the place where Christian pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago get their first views of the three spires of their destination, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela) and walk the final stage of the Camino de Santiago.
In the late afternoon, why not visit the five-star Hostal dos Reis Católicos, one of the most luxurious and beautiful hotels in the Paradores hotel chain, for a cup of tea or a drink? The hotel is a blend of history, art and tradition, the dream of pilgrims and emblem of Santiago. It is located on Obradoiro Square near the Cathedral, creating an area of spectacular beauty in one of the most visited provincial capitals in the world.
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our return flight to London Stansted, scheduled to depart at 10:35 am, arriving at 11:45.
This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
