Pilgrimage to The Holy Land
A Walking Pilgrimage. Led by The Revd Haydon Wilcox. 23rd October - 3rd November 2019.
DAY ONE: Heathrow - Tel Aviv - Jerusalem
Check-in at London Heathrow Airport for our morning flight to Tel Aviv. We arrive at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, where we will be met and assisted by a representative inside the Customs area, near to the luggage collection point. After Customs clearance, we’ll meet our local guide. We then travel to Jerusalem where we check in at our accommodation for a five-night stay. We have an early evening guided tour of the city, experiencing contrasts between the Hasidic district, an Arab district, a secular distric, etc. Dinner will be included in a traditional Jewish restaurant.
DAY TWO: Jerusalem & Bethlehem
After breakfast we drive to Bethlehem to view the city from an olive grove and have a service of reflection. We visit the Church of the Nativity as well as the Palestinian Christian shop where we will have the opportunity to purchase gifts. Lunch will be at choice in the Manger Square. This afternoon we return to Jerusalem for a walking tour of the Old City through the modern Jewish Quarter, the Cardo and Herodian Quarter. We also visit the Western Wall and Pool of Bethesda. We leave through St Stephen’s Gate. Dinner will be in our accommodation this evening followed by evening worship.
DAY THREE: Jerusalem
There will be an optional very early morning dawn visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. We visit the Mount of Olives with its spectacular view of the Old City (have a group photo taken here), Dominus Flevit where Jesus wept over Jerusalem, the Pater Noster and proceed to the Garden of Gethsemane and Church of all Nations. We cross the Kidron Valley for a lunch break (at choice). This afternoon we travel to Mount Zion including a visits to David’s tomb, Caiaphas’ House and the site of the Upper Room. Later, we proceed to the Garden Tomb and Gordon’s Calvary and celebrate a service of Holy Communion in the garden.
DAY FOUR: Dead Sea Region
We drive very early into the Judean Desert and stopping for a time of stillness in the desert. We proceed to Masada, touring the fortress on the summit, seeing Herod’s Palace, the Oldest Synagogue in the world and a fourth century church, ascending and descending by cable car. We make a stop at Ein Gedi for lunch (at choice) by the Dead Sea and an opportunity for a swim/float in the dead sea. This afternoon we visit Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. We return to Jerusalem in the late afternoon. We attend the ‘night spectacular’ sound and light show at David’s Citadel.
DAY FIVE: Jerusalem
We begin today with an early Communion Service at the Anglican Cathedral. Afterwards we visit the Shrine of the Book (where the Dead Sea Scrolls are located). We visit to YAD VASHAM (the Holocaust Memorial). Before lunch (at choice) we visit the Model of Jerusalem at the time of the 2nd Temple. The afternoon will be at leisure to shop. There will be an optional evening worship with the King of Kings Messianic Congregation. Tonights evening meal will be at an Arab restaurant where we experience traditional Middle Eastern food.
DAY SIX: Old Jerusalem & Samaria
After breakfast we return to the Old City, to walk the Via Dolorosa, following the Stations of the Cross, ending up at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Lunch will be at choice today. This afternoon, we travel along the Jordan Valley passing through Jericho and ascending the Mount of Temptation, and viewing St George’s Monastery by the Wedi Kelt. We continue to Ariel and check into our hotel. There will be time to rest and freshen up before dinner and a visit to the Biblical Garden.
DAY SEVEN: Samaria Region (West Bank)
After breakfast, we visit the biblical sites of Shiloh, Elon Moreh, Mount Gerizim and to look out onto Shechem (Nablus). We have lunch at the army cafe (at choice). This afternoon we meet a representative of the Samaritan community and visit their synagogue. This evening, we meet with local Christians and appreciate their missionary work and learn about Ariel and the struggles of this area. A coach will take us to visit the Christian Shop in Ariel and place of worship.
DAY EIGHT: Galilee
After breakfast we depart Ariel and travel to the Galilee. Enroute we visit Beth She’an with the chance to explore this historical site. We have the St Peter’s Fish lunch today at Ein Gev (included in the price). Afterwards we have a boat trip on across the lake with a visit to the Church of St Peter’s Primacy. This is the traditional site where Jesus met his disciples after his resurrection and where he commissioned Peter to feed his flock. Continue to our hotel by the shores of the Sea of Galilee. We have time to relax before dinner which will be in our hotel this evening followed by evening worship.
DAY NINE: Galilee & Northern Israel
After breakfast we have an early drive to explore the Galilee area with a visit to Tabgha, the place of seven springs and the feeding of five thousand. Afterwards, we visit the Church of the Beatitudes. Continue to Capernaum, here Jesus’ Galilean ministry was based, visiting the site of St Peter’s House and the early Christian Church. We proceed to Caesarea Philippi, with a view of Mount Hermon, passing Tel Dan and the Golan Heights followed by a visit to the Hermon Springs. We finish today with a visit to Lake Ram and with the opportunity to purchase lunch at the Druze restaurant (at choice). We return to our hotel in the late afternoon to relax before dinner in our hotel and time for worship.
DAY TEN: Galilee
After breakfast we visit the ‘Jesus Boat Museum’ followed by a visit to the Yardenit Baptismal site where we will have the opportunity to renew our baptismal vows or for baptism, for those who have not been baptised. We return to our hotel for time at leisure. Lunch will be at choice today. For those who wish, there will be an optional hike around part of the Sea of Galilee led by an experiences local guide to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and to experience the spirituality of this where Jesus primarily ministered. Dinner will be in our hotel tonight with time to celebrate Shabbat.
DAY ELEVEN: Galilee - Tel Aviv
After breakfast we depart for Tel Aviv passing Magdala, the home of Mary Magdalene and proceed to Cana. For those who wish, there will be the opportunity to renew wedding vows. Afterwards we travel to Nazareth and visit the Church of the Annuniciation and the Anglican Church. We have lunch (at choice) at the viewpoint near Nazareth. This afternoon, we travel along the Jordan Valley to Mount Tabor. We ascend to the top of via taxi’s to the Church of the Transfiguration where we have a thanksgiving service. Continue to Tel Aviv where we check into our accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY TWELVE: Tel Aviv - Heathrow
After breakfast and time at leisure we depart by coach for Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport for our afternoon return flight to Heathrow.
This tour involves a substantial amount of walking, some of which will be over irregular surfaces such as cobblestones and badly-maintained walking areas. If everyday walking is something you find difficult, this tour may be unsuitable for you.
